Don't Delay on Polar Express Tickets!

Category: North Conway Activities

Polar Express North ConwayTake a magical journey to the North Pole with the Polar Express Event of New England, an interactive experience that only happens here in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The trains depart each Friday and Saturday night beginning the last weekend in November.

It's a pretty special experience for grownups and kids alike. The parents love watching a child's excitement in the train ride and meeting a bunch of elves and Santa himself! Pajamas are encouraged for children and adults alike!

Because of the extreme popularity of this event, tickets for the performance are available through official lodging partners like Green Granite.

We are mentioning it in our June blog because advance tickets go fast and space is limited. Don't delay in getting yours by calling (800) 468-3666 to make a reservation!

Green Granite's Polar Express packages include two night's stay at our family-friendly inn in North Conway, deluxe continental breakfast each morning, tickets to the Polar Express, a gift for every child, and special surprise visitor from the North Pole.
We have a form on our website where interested parties can fill in their information and have someone call them regarding the Polar Express package and our pre-event activities.

The train station is about 2.5 miles away from Green Granite, or roughly 7 minutes away. Tickets are limited to 12 per household. Trains board at 4 pm for afternoon performances and 6:30 for evening performances, the event taking approximately 2 hours round-trip.

Net proceeds from the Polar Express Event fund literacy programs such as the Books in Character Outreach program, the Believe in Books Book bag program, and the Books from Birth program. More than 50,000 books have been given out through the outreach effort.

Stay at Green Granite during Laconia Bike Week

Category: North Conway Activities

Motorcycle riders are a special group of people. The image of the outlaw motorcycle gang is fading as the modern bikers found rumbling down the highways may just as well be CEOs or housewives enjoying the freedom of the open road and the fellowship at rallies where they can socialize with other riders.

Laconia Bike Week hotelsIf this sounds appealing to you, you might want to ride your bike on up to Mt. Washington Valley for the 91st annual Laconia Motorcycle Week June 14-22, 2014. At Green Granite Inn, we’re offering a 20% off Rack (Regular) Rates for June 13-23.

The Laconia week festivities include live music at various venues (including concerts with Lynyrd Skynryd and The Charlie Daniels Band), the Ms. Motorcycle Week, Miss Laconia Bikini and Miss Broken Spoke Laconia beauty contests, the U.S. Vintage Motorcycle Grand Prix at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway, a tribute to the Indian Chief at the American Police Motorcycle Museum, a pool tournament, a bike show, a tribute to activists for motorcyclists, scenic rides, the “Ride to the Sky” at Mt. Washington Auto Road, the 21st Annual POW/MIA Freedom Ride, a burrito eating contest, the 4th annual “Jesus Ride”, the “Love of Pets” Ride to benefit the NH Humane Society, and the biker build-off awards.

See the full list of Laconia Week events:  http://www.laconiamcweek.com/schedule

The Mt. Washington Auto Road is designating June 16 & 19 as motorcycle-only days, rain or shine, weather permitting.  A ride up Mt. Washington is a one of-a-kind experience. Encounter ever changing weather, panoramic views and four climate zones as you climb the highest point in the Northeast.

We think you’ll find Green Granite a great place to stay. We are located adjacent to the North Conway outlet shopping experience and in the middle of all activities of the Mt. Washington Valley.

Call 800-468-3666 to book a reservation at Green Granite. No discounts apply to third party bookings, other discounted rates or previous reservations.

Have Fun, Be Safe When Using Skimobiles

Category: North Conway Activities

Off-Highway Recreational Vehicles are a fun way to get around in the winter months. The cold returned with a vengeance at the end of February, so the trails should be set up for some great riding.

Skimobiles are welcome at The Green Granite Inn. We offer parking in certain areas of our parking lots to accommodate trailers. We are close to some popular trails. However, there is no direct access from our property and no riding of these vehicles allowed on the property, so you will need to transport any OHRV you bring with you on a trailer to nearby trails.

winter attractions north conwayWe want you to have a memorable and safe winter adventure. Use caution and common sense.

Here are some things to remember:
* You can only ride on trails designated and signed for your type of vehicle. The NH Bureau of Trails and the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association print statewide Snowmobile Trail maps. Landowner permission is required to operate on property of another.
* If you are visiting the area and do not own your own OHRV, one can be rented locally.
* Be prepared for extreme conditions. Cold temperatures can be dangerous, so wear clothing that is appropriate for your winter activities.
* Know your abilities and understand the capabilities of your skimobile. Every operator and every machine have different capabilities.
* Remember trail conditions are forever changing, so make sure that you operate at a speed that is reasonable for the existing conditions. For example, at night or when operating in other low-visibility conditions, reduce your speed so that you can identify and avoid sudden hazards on the trail or lake. Always be aware of the conditions of the trail.
* Don't Drink and Ride. New Hampshire has strict laws prohibiting operating any type of recreational vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If you take the chance, you will lose your privileges to operate any type of recreational vehicle or motor vehicle and pay substantial fines. The Fish and Game Department and the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association continue to promote zero tolerance. The legal blood alcohol concentration limit for operating OHRVs is similar to that of driving cars, .08%.
* Be especially careful on weekends that draw large crowds outdoors.
* Always check the thickness and condition of the ice before going out on any lakes.
* OHRV Safety Education Courses for snowmobiles, All-Terrain Vehicles and trail bikes are available in the area, taught by Fish and Game-certified volunteer instructors to certify children 12 and older.

To learn more about OHRV laws and registration fees, visit http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/OHRV/ohrv.htm#LawsDigest

Skiing in North Conway, New Hampshire

Category: North Conway Activities

skiing north conway The White Mountains have long been a popular destination for skiers since the 19th century. Long before skiing really took off in the United States, the White Mountains were home to “some of the first purpose-cut ski runs on the continent and a host of other innovations in grooming, lifts, and ski schools were developed here in the 1930s,” according to National Geographic. The high peaks make for an exhilarating ride, and the conditions are perfect for powder. Despite the area’s longtime fame for great slopes, new skiers are still discovering New Hampshire’s many great mountains and the area continues to receive positive press.

Last year Bretton Woods praised New Hampshire as a top ski spot for families, with “beautiful views of Mount Washington and gorgeous grooming.” The Boston Globe picked Wildcat Mountain this year for “yanked-from-postcard views” that also get you a great vantage point of The Presidential Range and Mount Washington, and highlighted Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch for its “character and soul” as one of the oldest ski resorts in the US. The New York Times highlighted Wildcat Mountain in 2009 for its seclusion, simplicity, and prime terrain for beginning and intermediate skiers, as well as those looking for a more wild ride.

Cross country skiers can enjoy numerous trails throughout the North Conway area, including those along Route 16A in Intervale, by the Saco River (across the street from the Green Granite, or ungroomed trails for more experienced skiers through the White Mountain National Forest. Less experienced skiers can explore Whitaker Woods or make their way to Intervale for a fun day trip. It’s a whole new way to experience the natural wonder of New Hampshire than summer hikes and ATV excursions.

With such a great history and range of trails, it’s no wonder so many people flock to North Conway for both cross country and downhill skiing. There’s also so much to see and do after a day hitting the slopes, like swinging by Moat Mountain Smokehouse and Brewery for local beers, wood-fired pizzas, burgers, nachos, and BBQ. Flatbread Company features organic fare, clay oven pizzas, with free-range meats, top-quality cheeses and plenty of toppings to fill you up after an active day. If you need supplies and equipment, there are numerous sports stores that stock what skiers need, including Joe Jones Sports, Bob and Terry’s Ski and Sports, North Conway Ski Equipment, and more.

If this weren’t enough to get you excited, the 2013-2014 ski season promises to be excellent with plenty of snow. An early start to the winter season and the placement of the jet stream over North Conway has many ski enthusiasts eagerly anticipating getting out on the slopes. As Outside Magazine explains, “The North Atlantic Oscillation, which follows the spread of high and low pressure across the northern Atlantic, is predicted to be “moderately negative” this winter. Negative NAO values can send storms as far south as Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia; although LaRosa sees the biggest dumps come to the Northeast.” Be sure to book your stay at the Green Granite for a ski vacation and make the most of this favorable winter weather pattern!

The conditions in the White Mountains are just right for creating some of the most spectacular fall colors, but the burst lasts for only a short amount of time. Staying at the Green Granite you are in the perfect position to not miss a minute of these beautiful leaves.

The waterfalls and trails at Crawford Notch State Park are an excellent choice in autumn. The White Mountain National Forest boasts the famous "Old Man of the Mountain" in Franconia Notch which lights up in autumn. Scenic roadways such as the Mount Washington Auto Road and the Kancamagus Highway are also quite popular at this time of year, and take you to high elevations and through some of the best parts of the White Mountains.

Be sure your camera is working and bring extra batteries, and pack binoculars so you can see all the fine detail in the lovely views. If you want to get out on the trail, a visit to the International Mountain Equipment store can yield great deals on top quality equipment. It’s been stocking hikers, skiers, and climbers since 1974 and is one of the favorites of serious outdoors enthusiasts.

When dusk comes and puts an end to your day of leaf peeping, North Conway has many fine restaurants for you to enjoy. Grab dinner at the Moat Mountain Smokehouse and Brewing Company or the Flatbread Company or the popular Black Capp Grill. Green Granite: The North Conway Hotel for Moose

Category: North Conway Activities

north conway hotels North Conway is well known as a destination for anyone who loves the great outdoors. With the beautiful White Mountains, the nearby Saco River, and plenty of places to bike, hike, ski, and ATV, there’s so much to see and do. Many visitors have delighted in sightings of New Hampshire’s wildlife populations, including the occasional bear and plenty of moose.  Anyone who has stayed at the Green Granite knows how we love the local moose, from the moose in our lobby to the moose in our logo.

Moose have not always had a happy story in North Conway. When the area was first settled, hunters brought the moose population down to just 13 by 1898. Fortunately, the area’s forests were preserved and state and federal organizations that regulated fish, game, and natural parks brought the area’s wildlife populations back into balance. Today there are many moose throughout New Hampshire’s beautiful forests.

326972 298375320192551 1052920260 oThe New Hampshire Fish and Game Department advises any tourists hoping for a moose sighting should try Route 3 north of Pittsburg to the Canadian border; Route16 north of Milan to the Maine Border; Route 26 east of Dixville Notch to the Maine Border; Route 112 from Lincoln  east to the Bear Notch Road; Route 110 north of Berlin to Rte 110A. Or you can simply take to the woods at dusk from May-October and hope for good luck while you enjoy the White Mountains many other magnificent sights.

Kayakers have also had good luck spotting moose, as moose often feed on plants that row near ponds and lakes in the early morning and at sunset. If you are already interested in exploring New Hampshire’s waterways or are excited for some fishing, you just might see a moose in the bargain. There are also some popular moose tours north and east of the Green Granite, such as the popular Gorham Moose Tours near Moose Brook State Park and Pemi Valley Moose Tours in Franconia Notch State Park.

One thing is for sure, if you are looking for a magical wildlife experience, Green Granite is the perfect North Conway Hotel, putting you right on the edge of some of the best state parks in New Hampshire. To prepare for your trek into moose country, pick up supplies at L.L. Bean store and grab a hearty breakfast at Peach’s Restaurant or Priscilla’s. Both have big excellent breakfasts and a homey, welcoming atmosphere. When you are weary from the woods and ready to relax, you can return to civilization and enjoy North Conway’s many fine restaurants, shops, and more, as well as the Green Granite’s comfy beds. We’re sure that our moose in the lobby would love to hear all about your adventures!
