Category: North Conway Activities

hotels in white mountains Each autumn Leaf Peepers from all over the world flock to New Hampshire to take in the spectacular New England leaves. The conditions in the White Mountains are just right for creating some of the most spectacular fall colors, but the burst lasts for only a short amount of time. Staying at the Green Granite you are in the perfect position to not miss a minute of these beautiful leaves.

We are directly across the street from the Sacro River camping area and trails, and a short drive from many places to peep at the lovely leaves. Whether you want to view leaves by hiking, biking, ATV, or cruising in your car or on your motorcycle, there’s plenty of ways to take in the natural beauty all around.

Late September and early October are often the best weeks to view the foliage. Almost any area popular at other times of year gets even more scenic when the leaves are in full color. The waterfalls and trails at Crawford Notch State Park are an excellent choice in autumn. The White Mountain National Forest boasts the famous "Old Man of the Mountain" in Franconia Notch which lights up in autumn. Scenic roadways such as the Mount Washington Auto Road and the Kancamagus Highway are also quite popular at this time of year, and take you to high elevations and through some of the best parts of the White Mountains.

Be sure your camera is working and bring extra batteries, and pack binoculars so you can see all the fine detail in the lovely views. If you want to get out on the trail, a visit to the International Mountain Equipment store can yield great deals on top quality equipment. It’s been stocking hikers, skiers, and climbers since 1974 and is one of the favorites of serious outdoors enthusiasts.

When dusk comes and puts an end to your day of leaf peeping, North Conway has many fine restaurants for you to enjoy. Grab dinner at the Moat Mountain Smokehouse and Brewing Company or the Flatbread Company or the popular Black Capp Grill. There are plenty of delicious places to fill up after a day out in the mountains. Book your fall foliage stay soon-- it’s a busy season and you don’t want to miss out on a one of a kind getaway!

Green Granite: The North Conway Hotel for Moose

Category: North Conway Activities

north conway hotels North Conway is well known as a destination for anyone who loves the great outdoors. With the beautiful White Mountains, the nearby Saco River, and plenty of places to bike, hike, ski, and ATV, there’s so much to see and do. Many visitors have delighted in sightings of New Hampshire’s wildlife populations, including the occasional bear and plenty of moose.  Anyone who has stayed at the Green Granite knows how we love the local moose, from the moose in our lobby to the moose in our logo.

Moose have not always had a happy story in North Conway. When the area was first settled, hunters brought the moose population down to just 13 by 1898. Fortunately, the area’s forests were preserved and state and federal organizations that regulated fish, game, and natural parks brought the area’s wildlife populations back into balance. Today there are many moose throughout New Hampshire’s beautiful forests.

326972 298375320192551 1052920260 oThe New Hampshire Fish and Game Department advises any tourists hoping for a moose sighting should try Route 3 north of Pittsburg to the Canadian border; Route16 north of Milan to the Maine Border; Route 26 east of Dixville Notch to the Maine Border; Route 112 from Lincoln  east to the Bear Notch Road; Route 110 north of Berlin to Rte 110A. Or you can simply take to the woods at dusk from May-October and hope for good luck while you enjoy the White Mountains many other magnificent sights.

Kayakers have also had good luck spotting moose, as moose often feed on plants that row near ponds and lakes in the early morning and at sunset. If you are already interested in exploring New Hampshire’s waterways or are excited for some fishing, you just might see a moose in the bargain. There are also some popular moose tours north and east of the Green Granite, such as the popular Gorham Moose Tours near Moose Brook State Park and Pemi Valley Moose Tours in Franconia Notch State Park.

One thing is for sure, if you are looking for a magical wildlife experience, Green Granite is the perfect North Conway Hotel, putting you right on the edge of some of the best state parks in New Hampshire. To prepare for your trek into moose country, pick up supplies at L.L. Bean store and grab a hearty breakfast at Peach’s Restaurant or Priscilla’s. Both have big excellent breakfasts and a homey, welcoming atmosphere. When you are weary from the woods and ready to relax, you can return to civilization and enjoy North Conway’s many fine restaurants, shops, and more, as well as the Green Granite’s comfy beds. We’re sure that our moose in the lobby would love to hear all about your adventures!

The Green Granite is Your Ultimate Rock Climbing Home Base!

Category: North Conway Activities

white mountain attractions The White Mountains do far more than attract scenery-searching tourists and sweethearts, nineteenth century artists from the White Mountain school, and holiday skiiers. North Conway has long been a fantastic destination for rock climbers, too. Since 1931, one of the most famous ascents has been a 500 granite wall called Cathedral Ledge that remains a favorite for locals and travelers alike.

Nearby Cathedral is the Whitehorse Ledge, a challenging stretch of over 800 feet with six pitches. Both faces have several climbing areas of different difficulties, accessible from gorgeous trails that are not to be missed at any time of year. When you count all the various crabs, back country destinations, and other faces, there are about 2,000 diffrent climbs one can make.

For those who are less experienced, there are schools that can help you hone your skills and learn about your equipment. The International Mountain Climbing School. Their classes include technical topics like Advanced Rock Climbing, Rock Anchor and Protection Clinics, Rock Leader course, Rock Self-rescue courses, and classes on Top Rope Anchoring and Crevasse Rescue, along others. The school has been serving clibmers in the Mount Washington Valley since 1979 and has everything from indoor classes for beginners to expeditions of all sorts. There's even a Mount Washington mountaineering adventure you can sign up for!

No matter how long you've been climbing or you level of expertise, there's a climb for you in the White Mountains. Next time you stay at the Green Granite, be sure to bring your gear and start heading up a fun face like Thin Air, Across the Unierse, Moby Grape, or Toe Crack! You'll quickly understand why North Conway has been a hot destination for climbers for over 80 years!

North Conway: A History of Fantastic Fun

Category: North Conway Activities

lodging north conway North Conway has long been attractive to tourists thanks to the beautiful White Mountains. Since settlers first came to the area in the 1700s, the local natural wonders continue to draw more and more people to the area, whether for a visit or a lifetime. The White Mountain School of painting, a subset of the more famous Hudson River School, initially attracted many artists to the area. Their works served to further popularize North Conway and the other villages in the Mount Washington region throughout the early 1800s.

In addition to artists, North Conway attracted equal numbers of rock climbers and mountaineers eager to conquer the White Mountain’s steep peaks. Explorers as early as 1642 have tackled the local crags and trails. Throughout the late 1800s rail traffic increased, bringing even more people in to appreciate everything the White Mountains have to offer. Trains were key to the birth of a booming ski industry in the area, with Cranmore Mountain opening a ski school in the 1930s . This heritage can still be enjoyed at places of interest like the North Conway Depot Railroad Museum, the Mount Washington Cog Railway, and Conway Scenic Railway.

The arrival of the automobile only further expanded North Conway tourism. New businesses joined the community throughout the booming post-war years. Storyland opened in 1953 and in the 1980s the Settler’s Green outlet mall opened and attracted a variety of new businesses to the area. The Green Granite opened around the same time, conveniently located nearby. In 1995 the popular Polar Express event began, wowing families every holiday season since. With such a long history as a destination of adventure, beauty, and fun, it’s no wonder that North Conway continues to wow both long-term fans and new visitors each year. The Green Granite is proud to be a part of this unique community, and to be part of a travel tradition that continues for generations.

Snowmobiling in North Conway New Hampshire

Category: North Conway Activities

white mountains skiing

The North Conway area of New Hampshire is perfectly situated in the heart of great snowmobiling country. New Hampshire has almost 7,000 miles of snowmobile trails, from routes through national parks and public lands to those that wind through various public and private lands thanks to arrangements made by local snowmobile clubs. With the picturesque White Mountains all around and well-mapped routes that will take you in and out of little hamlets, through the wilderness, and even right up to the Canadian border, you could spend a lifetime exploring. If all you have is a winter vacation, there are plenty of options right by the Green Granite.

The closest to the Inn is the lovely Corridor 19 trail, maintained by the Ossipee Valley Snow Mobile Club. It connects to several other trails and trail systems. As the OSVSMC explains on their website, "The OVSC trail system travels across Rte 16 from White Lake State Park (at Canoe King) to the North and South on Corridor 19. South on 19 to Polly’s Crossing thru Ossipee village on the historic rail bed and connects to the Seven Lakes SMC area and the Wolfeboro club trails. To the North on Corridor 19 to the intersection at the Kancamaugus Highway and the Mountain Meadows Riders Trails." Corridor 19 corridor can also take you to a spectacular two mile climb up Black Cap Mountain where there is an unbeatable view at 2100 feet up.

About 10 minutes from the Green Granite is Northwestern Extremes snowmobile rentals. They sell maps and offer guided tours that are great whether you're a beginner or simply want to be introduced to the locals' favorite trails. Lil' Man Snowmobile Rentals is a little further away-- about 30 minutes, but right in the White Mountain National Forest. For those bringing their own snowmobiles, the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association has a great brochure online and in print that shows the network of Corridor and Primary trails statewide, though it is not as detailed as some local maps will be.

In addition to Corridor 19, the Bear Notch system is a short drive away, as is Route 230. Bear Notch is closed loop with some branch trails that is well recommended for beginners and intermediate snowmobilers, with many parts converted from old cross country routes. Like most New Hampshire snowmobile trails, Bear Notch opens up to other networks. From there you can leave the closed loop and explore the many many miles that twist around the White Mountain National Forest.

No matter where you choose to snowmobile, the Green Granite Inn is conveniently located for both outdoor adventures and creature comforts. After a day cruising the countryside, you can be confident there is somewhere warm, comfortable, and inviting to return to. Near trailheads and rental outfits as well as across the street from the Blackcap Grille and minutes from shopping, other eateries, and plenty of attractions, it's the perfect balance.
