Don't Miss Laconia Bike Week at the Green Granite!

Category: North Conway Activities

Photo Credit: New Hampshire Division of Parks and RecreationThis year is the 90th annual Laconia Motorcycle Week, one of the first and most enduring rallys for motorcycle enthusiasts. Laconia Bike week celebrates rides of all kinds, from hogs to crotch rockets to Triumphs, choppers, trikes, BWs, and everything in between. There are a variety of events in towns all over New Hampshire, but we at the Green Granite are especially excited about the Rally in the Valley events that tie in to Laconia Bike Week.

Things will kick off at Hillbillies Barbecue in North Conway on June 8th 8:30-11:30PM, and for the next week there will be plenty of guided scenic rides through the picturesque White Mountains, live music, poker tournaments, a tattoo contest, breakfasts, and one fun wrap up party.

One of the best events is the annual Ride to the Sky. Bikers can take to the beautiful  Mount Washington Auto Road, which extends from New Hampshire Route 16 in Pinkham Notch to the summit of Mount Washington. The road climbs 4,618 ft and is spectacular riding, with curves, turns, and spectacular views. The Ride to the Sky gives motorcycles rule of the road, with Monday, June 10 and Thursday, June 13 designated bike-only.

This is one of the most popular events of the year in North Conway, and if you’ve never experienced Laconia Motorcycle Week for yourself, you don’t want to miss out!

Wildquack Duck Race and River Festival on Memorial Day Weekend!

Category: North Conway Activities

Since 1989, a strange phenomenon occurs each year in the Wildcat River at Jackson Falls. 3,500 bright yellow rubber duckies appear in the waters and go floating downstream, racing to the finish line. Thousands of people come to Jackson, New Hampshire each year to see this unusual spectacle, and hope that the duck they've sponsored wins one of fabulous prizes. It’s the annual Wildquack Duck Race, part of Jackson’s Memorial Day weekend festivities, and it’s definitely a must-see event.

The Wildquack River Festival not only offers a fun spectacle, but an opportunity to win prizes. Each year offers amazing prize packages, Silent Auctions, and other chances to win vacation stays, dining certificates, spa treatments, gift baskets, attractions tickets, gift baskets, art work, photos, and even a mountain bike.

Each year there are also plenty of yummy foods to eat, from barbecue to fair food like kettle corn, and ice cream, and New England favorites like lobster rolls. Don’t forget dessert! Jackson has its very own Cake Boss competition and visitors can taste the entries for $1. Whether you like to bake or sample, it’s definitely the most delicious part of the festival.

Other festival events include a talent show, parade, photos with the official Wildquack mascot, and the crowning of the Wildquack King or Queen. The festival begins at 7AM and continue all day. It’s easy to see why the Wildquack River Festival has become such a time-honored tradition for locals and visitors alike!

For more information see the Jackson Chamber of Commerce website!

North Conway: A History of Fantastic Fun

Category: North Conway Activities

North Conway has long been attractive to tourists thanks to the beautiful White Mountains. Since settlers first came to the area in the 1700s, the local natural wonders continue to draw more and more people to the area, whether for a visit or a lifetime. The White Mountain School of painting, a subset of the more famous Hudson River School, initially attracted many artists to the area. Their works served to further popularize North Conway and the other villages in the Mount Washington region throughout the early 1800s.

In addition to artists, North Conway attracted equal numbers of rock climbers and mountaineers eager to conquer the White Mountain’s steep peaks. Explorers as early as 1642 have tackled the local crags and trails. Throughout the late 1800s rail traffic increased, bringing even more people in to appreciate everything the White Mountains have to offer. Trains were key to the birth of a booming ski industry in the area, with Cranmore Mountain opening a ski school in the 1930s . This heritage can still be enjoyed at places of interest like the North Conway Depot Railroad Museum, the Mount Washington Cog Railway, and Conway Scenic Railway.

The arrival of the automobile only further expanded North Conway tourism. New businesses joined the community throughout the booming post-war years. Storyland opened in 1953 and in the 1980s the Settler’s Green outlet mall opened and attracted a variety of new businesses to the area. The Green Granite opened around the same time, conveniently located nearby. In 1995 the popular Polar Express event began, wowing families every holiday season since. With such a long history as a destination of adventure, beauty, and fun, it’s no wonder that North Conway continues to wow both long-term fans and new visitors each year. The Green Granite is proud to be a part of this unique community, and to be part of a travel tradition that continues for generations.

Snowmobiling in North Conway New Hampshire

Category: North Conway Activities

The North Conway area of New Hampshire is perfectly situated in the heart of great snowmobiling country. New Hampshire has almost 7,000 miles of snowmobile trails, from routes through national parks and public lands to those that wind through various public and private lands thanks to arrangements made by local snowmobile clubs. With the picturesque White Mountains all around and well-mapped routes that will take you in and out of little hamlets, through the wilderness, and even right up to the Canadian border, you could spend a lifetime exploring. If all you have is a winter vacation, there are plenty of options right by the Green Granite.

The closest to the Inn is the lovely Corridor 19 trail, maintained by the Ossipee Valley Snow Mobile Club. It connects to several other trails and trail systems. As the OSVSMC explains on their website, "The OVSC trail system travels across Rte 16 from White Lake State Park (at Canoe King) to the North and South on Corridor 19. South on 19 to Polly’s Crossing thru Ossipee village on the historic rail bed and connects to the Seven Lakes SMC area and the Wolfeboro club trails. To the North on Corridor 19 to the intersection at the Kancamaugus Highway and the Mountain Meadows Riders Trails." Corridor 19 corridor can also take you to a spectacular two mile climb up Black Cap Mountain where there is an unbeatable view at 2100 feet up.

About 10 minutes from the Green Granite is Northwestern Extremes snowmobile rentals. They sell maps and offer guided tours that are great whether you're a beginner or simply want to be introduced to the locals' favorite trails. Lil' Man Snowmobile Rentals is a little further away-- about 30 minutes, but right in the White Mountain National Forest. For those bringing their own snowmobiles, the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association has a great brochure online and in print that shows the network of Corridor and Primary trails statewide, though it is not as detailed as some local maps will be.

In addition to Corridor 19, the Bear Notch system is a short drive away, as is Route 230. Bear Notch is closed loop with some branch trails that is well recommended for beginners and intermediate snowmobilers, with many parts converted from old cross country routes. Like most New Hampshire snowmobile trails, Bear Notch opens up to other networks. From there you can leave the closed loop and explore the many many miles that twist around the White Mountain National Forest.

No matter where you choose to snowmobile, the Green Granite Inn is conveniently located for both outdoor adventures and creature comforts. After a day cruising the countryside, you can be confident there is somewhere warm, comfortable, and inviting to return to. Near trailheads and rental outfits as well as across the street from the Blackcap Grille and minutes from shopping, other eateries, and plenty of attractions, it's the perfect balance.
