About Us - Growing from a small HotelWith 6 efficiency units in the heart of North Conway, our 90-room hotel and inn with 100-person conference center is now one of the finest lodgings in the Mt. Washington Valley.Over the last few decades, we've become one of the most well-known and loved places for families to come back to year after year. We look forward to welcoming you to the Green Granite, whether it's your first visit, or an annual tradition. History and MoreWhy the name "Green Granite"?For almost fifty years the quarry located behind the inn was one of the nation's major suppliers of high-quality red and green granite. The quarry employed over 300 men in the various stages of the mining process including stonecutting, honing, surfacing and polishing. It was a rough but skilled work; the results were used for many notable structures including Grant's Tomb in New York City, the Masonic Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia, and railroad stations in Denver, Colorado and Portland, Maine. Times and methods gradually changed and by 1940 the quarry began its journey into obscurity. Very little documented information is available today concerning the quarry, but a bit of the legacy is preserved at Heritage-New Hampshire in Glen where several huge granite relics from the quarry are displayed. We also have one of these samples on display—on the stairway landing to one of our conference rooms appropriately named "The Granite Room." History In the beginning, the Green Granite was only a small motel with 6 efficiency units. 8 rooms were added in 1980, and in 1982 an additional 12 rooms were added. In 1985, the then current owner, Dick Kitchen, built a large lobby and 32 more rooms, updated the quality of the existing rooms, and installed a computerized telephone system. During the next three years several changes occurred to round out the property. A new wing was built, a conference center with a 100-person capacity was added, and 6 adjacent condominiums were purchased to bring the hotel to its current 90 rooms. In 1996, the Green Granite Motel became the Green Granite Inn & Conference Center after a half million dollars was spent on an indoor pool, exercise room, and the Redstone Hall Conference Room. In 1998, four facades were added with cupolas which tied all the sections of the inn together. In 1999, the Tolley family acquired the Green Granite Inn & Conference Center while in the process of building a new hotel in North Conway which is now the Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites with 78 units, including 18 suites. In February of 2000, the Tolley family acquired the Christmas Farm Inn located in Jackson, New Hampshire. |
